LOYOLA COLLEGE - BOPITIYA BRANCH

E-mail Print

On 15th of January 2003 Loyola College, Negombo, Bopitiya Branch, was declared open by Most Rev. Dr. Oswald Gomis the Archbishop of Colombo.  The Third Order Regular Franciscans of Our Lady of Sri Lanka was invited to manage this school, by His Grace.  The Franciscan Brothers and Priests have rendered invaluable  service in the field of education in Sri Lanka.

Initial discussions were held by the Rector Rev. Fr. Trevor Martin of  Loyola College, Negombo, with the Provincial of TOR  Very Rev.Fr.Neville Fernando, Rev. Bro. Thilakasiri Fernando who was appointed to be the Principal of the Branch School and the late Episcopal Vicar of Colombo North Very Rev. Fr. Joe Wickremasinghe.  This was the first Branch School to be opened during the tenure of office of Most Rev. Dr. Oswald Gomis, the Archbishop of Colombo.

Till buildings were constructed for this purpose, the Bopitiya Parish Church School that was not functioning then, was used as a temporary measure with the cooperation extended by Rev. Fr. Basil Nicholas the Parsh Priest.  At the inception students were enrolled to two classes.  Two experienced teachers namely Rev. Sr. Callistra and Mrs. Priyanthi Fernandopulle were the first, class teachers of Grades 1- E and 1- F  respectively.   Approximately 80 students were admitted in the first year.

In 2004 one  more parallel class was introduced and approximately 120 students have been  admitted since then every year.  Today there are  811 students studying from Grades 1- 7. and there are over 25 teachers on the staff.

The TOR Provincial with his Counsellors and the Principal of the Branch School purchased a plot of land almost adjoining the public playground three years age.  At present the students of Grades 4-6 are accommodated in the new building.  The standard of education on the whole is improving remarkably.   In 2007, ten out of eighty students got through the scholarship examination and in 2008,  twenty students out of  hundred and twenty were successful at this examination.  An important feature of overall performance is that a higher percentage of students have obtained over 100 marks. Already four batches of students have received First Holy Communion since the school was started on 15th January 2003.   For their spiritual development we have Holy Mass on First Fridays and Way of  the Cross and Confessions during the season of  Lent.

The sports in school namely Cricket, Table Tennis, Athletics, Swimming and Netball  have developed during the past three years and participation is only in the under 13 category.

In order to improve the standard of English in school  special classes are conducted after school by a reputed institute.  From Grade VI upwards one parallel class is in the English Medium.

Our objective is to give the students a full education.   Hence, education, discipline and sports are given its due place.  The School Management is well focused in this regard.

Our sincere thanks go to Rev. Bro. Thilakasiri Fernando who rendered yeoman service as the Principal of Loyola College Negombo, Bopitiya Branch.  He was accorded  a farewell as he left for Rome  to do his priestly studies on 23rd September 2009. His successor Rev.Fr.Mark Fernando as Acting Principal was welcomed on the same day.
